1st Official Alumni of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College

http://jgecalum.org/
It was a cold evening of December, 1999. Sun disappeared behind the Krishnachura trees. I was watching the tea garden from the fourth year hostel of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (JGEC). Gradually, I realized the definition of silence!

Most of the things of this 50 years old engineering college of East India interpret that silence of tea garden. But that silence of tea garden never stops the flow of small River Rukruka. Life moves within the silence!

The first ever official alumni of JGEC are not an exception! It started its function silently, echoing the “voice of JGEC”, i.e. “silence”! It has an office within the college premises. Do not ask about date of inauguration; do not ask about the originator! Neither “silence” can be described with dates, nor “silence” be originated! Just feel the flowing Rukruka within the silence! Official alumni of JGEC are just like the “Rukruka” within the silence of tea garden.

At present the official procedure of alumni association (The Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College Alumni Association) is in forming stage. Mr. Gautam Bhaduri of ’83 pass-out batch is coordinating different agencies for the formation of alumni. Now it is time for all the small alumni unions to come together and make a bigger platform, which has a base office at college campus, and moreover which is officially recognized by college administration.

There can be many debates over this issue. But it is time for all the ex-students and present students of JGEC to share a common platform with close coordination. All the students of this picturesque college love JGEC. But in this process the ex-students can not ignore present generation of students. The whole purpose of alumni is to elevate the status of college. The purpose of alumni is not to perform cultural functions and get together only. Status of the college can be elevated if present and past students share a single stage. So it is an opportunity, it is a rare river “Rukruka” with the silence of tea garden. Just come and seat at the bank of Rukruka and feel it.
All the photograpgs are taken by students of JGEC

  1. Dada,I very strongly feel that we have miles to go to establish our college as a brand. As you know every year we almost waste around 20 lakhs in a single day at the social night.i always feel, Is stead, if we do an inter college event and we give more focus on cultural and tech events, our college will get good advertisement.
2nd, we really need some seniors like you, who interact with us.that is important.
3rd)making alumni is mere a step, we really have to take some strong initiative and we should give more focus on internship, research, industrial collaboration.
I value your love about jolu and i am really so inspired from your and Bhaduri das, initiative.
Thanks for this post.i will post a similar post soon.

  2. I believe, the first and foremost objective of the "new" alumni association should be to establish the JGEC brand image in the market place.
We need active participation from assoc. in getting top companies to the campus for recruitments. To achieve that a small placement cell needs to be set up at the behest of the alumni association and shoul comprise of present students (around 3 nos from 2nd and 3rd year), association members (around 5 nos.) and 2 teachers (preferably one of them should be an ex-student of JGEC). Of course it needs to have the blessings from the college authority and should bring them on same page on strategy and plans. The real result of a constructive effort will come with time and hence don't jump into conclusions if it does not bring the top results in the first year itself. How the strategy can be implemented needs to be discussed in the forum so I'm not going to give my unilateral ideas here right now.
The other most important goal of the alumni association should be to quickly establish chapters in major cities. I believe, we have some fragmented approach towards this and if there are some existing platforms we should quickly bring them under the umbrella of the association we are talking about and identify people in these chapters who will be nodal points for co-ordination. At the least we should have chapters in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune,Bangalore and Hyderabad and of course in Kolkata. A close understanding among these centres will help bring in opportunities for the students and will also help in establishing the Brand JGEC in organizations in these cities.
These are the sciences of brand establishment in job market.
The art of it should be pursued as well through soft means. We had a rich tradition of inter college meets in our college. Should restart that right from next year. In fact we can arrange a panel discussion in Kolkata on subjects like the future of technical edication or something like that under the banner of JGEC and marking it as Golden Jubilee discussion of JGEC- market it through media, invite an eminent personality from business world to deliver the key note speech, invite panelists from different streams of education and social sciences and then make a big splash of it through electronic and print media. I remember the names of Aniruddha Dhar and Partha Dasgupta who are JGEC ex-students. Aniruddha, I believe is still in ABP Group (he was there at least till 5 years back and is very close to Aparna Sen) and Partha Dasgupta is a producer in Tara Channel. They can help us identify right media strategy for best exposure. These media focus is required to showcase ourselves and be up there alog with other institutions.
My other suggestion is to cut down on internal networking and get togethers. Those are very important but can't be the primary objective of any alumni association and unfortunately it was with erstwhile JGEC alumni associations. The activities should be driven through passion for the college and not for any other purpose.
Would love to participate in any discussion in future. Our initiatives should not stop after March as Golden Jubilee social programme should be treated as a launch pad and not as the final goal.

  3. Mr. Siddhartha Ghoshal (Director- Partnerships at GE Energy) is ex-student of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (1988-92) batch and PGDBM from IIM, Kolkata. His organized thought and policy driven ideas are defenitely resource for the college.
Harsh is final year student, at present, at Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College. Initiative from student like him is strength for the college.
During March 11-12, 2011, ex-students from different corners will visit college to attend reunion of 50 years celebraation. That will be a great platform for alumni association.

  4. It gives me immense pleasure to see the efforts of the present students of JGEC to have a real official alumni in place after so many years which the seniors like us have failed to form. It's also a matter of great pride that the 50 years celebration is being organised in a big way with the enthusiasm of all present and past students of this best located Engineering College of Bengal. I still remember the wonderful experience of watching Kanchanjungha peak from the 2nd floor back wing of hostel no 1 where I spent three years from 1978 to 1981 everyday morning to make the mind fresh.
I would have loved to be a part of this great celebration in near future but my job situation and geographical location at present is not allowing me to be there.
I am looking forward to the formation of the Ist official Alumni association of our college which will be very useful for the present and past students of our college in the days to come , I am pretty sure .
    All the best to all.

  6. Today 5th March, 2011. I just talked with Hassan, present GS of JGEC. He informed that, today the inauguration of 50years celebration was a grand success. On 11-12 March, 2011, a great section of ex-students will reach Jalpaiguri, to celebrate reunion program. It will be a great platform where the official alumni related issues can be discussed with more intensity.
Regards and best wishes to all of you,

  7. Golden Jubilee Reunion, 2011 at JGEC, held on 12th March, 2011

Reunion on 12th March, 2011 was a grand success. Around 250 ex-students, starting from 1st Batch (i.e. 1966 passout batch) to last batch (i.e. 2010 passout batch) was present in the rendezvous. Principal and Alumni member, Professor J. Jhampati inaugurated the evening reunion program. All the ex-students were overwhelmed with the atmosphere.
In the morning, most of the ex-students were present in the meeting of 1st official alumni. The meeting was a super success, too. All the members had stressed on the importance of official alumni, having head quarter at JGEC premises. Professor J. Jhampati was also present in that meeting.

  13. Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College (JGEC), India is in News, for Great Reason

It is a proud moment for JGECans. Alumni Association, JGEC campus, which is formed few years ago, has a mission to work for students and college, and for bigger causes of society. Alumni Association organized a national level seminar at JGEC campus on 24-25 Dec. The purpose of the National Level Seminar was to spread JGECs wing to outer world, for a greater societal cause: Developmental Activities of North Bengal and Contribution of JGEC. Main focus was to make government and people aware about the possible ways to handle Earth Quake in a preventive way. For long run sustainability, people need technological solution to face natural disaster like earthquake and flood. The TELEGRAPH, Kolkata had covered the national level seminar news on 27th Dec, with utter importance. The Telegraph coverage interprets the vision and mission of the Alumni Association, JGEC campus, which is trying to bring all JGECans in a single platform, with an objective of social development.

Anandabajar Patrika covered the news, having following link:

Different Bengali New Channels covered the news.
JGEC is changing, and it is pretty good that the alumni association of JGEC campus is part of this historic change. It is made with a focus of forming official alumni. Support and positive criticism from all corners are needed to make it real official alumni.

  16. Alumni Association, JGEC Campus: Planning for Reunion & Alumni programs for 2012-13:

From early days, JGEC has never seen much organized alumni activities at campus. There are many alumni chapters around the globe, but all of them have very less activities and contribution at campus. To bridge the gap between present students and ex-students, an alumni association has been formed at campus, few years back. The student’s communication cell is active part of this alumni association.

Inspite of many odds, the alumni association is able to organize 2 major activities at campus:

    1. A national level seminar at JGEC during 24-25 Dec, 2011 (which had got good media coverage)
    2. A program on Prof. N.C. Bose (our first principal) during 7 March, 2012.

Both the programs were accompanied with alumni get together and reunion. Till date all the Re-union programs at campus were performed by present students only (during social time). But this year (2012), students had organized reunion along with alumni association, JGEC campus. The reunion (8 March) was organized along with a seminar (7 march).

Alumni association, JGEC campus, wants to prepare an Alumni-calendar for Y2012-13, so that instead of single Reunion of March, now we will have 3 nos. alumni get-together at JGEC campus along with seminars or value added programs for students.

It has been found that, many a times, ex-students cannot manage to visit campus during March Reunion, due to year ending. So, now there will be get together during August and January also. Ex-students can manage to visit campus as per their convenience. Also, all the reunion will accompany seminars/ classes/ workshop; so the reunion will be more purposeful.

Calendar for 2012-13, are as follows:

    1. August 7, 2012 (Tuesday) (College Foundation day)
    i) Morning (11 AM): Flag Hoisting, road show around campus with live-songs by students
ii) Afternoon (3 PM): a technical/career guidance class for student, by any ex-student (at language lab).
iii) Evening (6 PM): Alumni and present students get together and a cultural program (at Auditorium)

    2. January 23 to 27, 2013 (any 2 days, preferably friday to sunday):
National Level Seminar on any prominent techno-socio-economic issue (eg. Development of North Bengal and Role of JGEC) by eminent professors from IIT/ NIT, etc and alumni rendezvous during evening

    3. March (2nd week), 2013 (2 days):
    i) first day morning: a techno-administrative seminar lectured by ex-students;
ii) second day: ex-students reunion organized by students and alumni association.

This is at planning stage now and will be finalized bu end April 2012. Alumni Association requests you to convey your suggestion and observation.

A section of students has already showed interest for such activities at campus. Time is coming when Alumni Association can organize such programs with good students’ participation. JGEC will have to change!!!

  17. Some seniors had provided following feedback for 2012-13 Alumni planning:
    1. Fund is real problem for alumni association, JGEC campus, as it is formed newly. During last year National Level Seminar, arranging fund was real issue. There was appeal to contribute minimum amount for successful organization of the program. Hardly few seniors had provided contribution for the program. Some of the seniors (like Mr. Aloke basu, Mr. Anupam Bose, Mr. Biswajit Ghosh and some others, sorry if I missed anybody's name) had contributed huge to made that program successful. Some of the alumni chapter like UAE had provided useful finacial assistance. Also, seniors like Kousik Mondal (Omlet'da) had worked lot to found out sponsors. Due to contribution of these seniors and huge effort of present students, the National Level Seminar was a real success, which had caught huge media attraction. Considering previous experience and lack of interest from most seniors to assist such cause, some seniors had pointed that, National Level Seminar can be arranged along with March 2013 Reunion and JECLAT. Still it is at planning stage. In that case, there wil be two alumni meet at campus during August 8, 2012 foundation day and March 2013.

  18. Latest Development: Coming 5th May, 2012, many ex-students across the globe will meet at Durgapur to discuss future course of action for JGEC ex-students. It is not only a get together. The meeting has many purposes. Some very senior ex-students from abroad are ...coming to India only for this meeting. Also, ex-students from various other locations have confirmed their attendance (like Kolkata and Jalpaiguri, etc). Members from many existing alumni chapters, including members from Alumni Association, JGEC campus wil be present in that meeting. In the meeting, future course of ex-students activities will be discussed. Also, some target for ex-students activities will be discussed, and hopefully finalized in that meeting. Many ex-students are working on forming a strong common ex-students platform, for last few years. This meeting will drive that mission and a route map will be drawn.
