Rethinking Human Civilization

The recent incident in Nepal, where massive floods have devastated a vast area across the Tibet–Nepal border, has created a huge global concern about the consequences of destroying nature through human-centric activitiHuman beings have developed civilisation over a long period of time. However, this civilisation is fundamentally based on the exploitation of nature and natural resources, and it has now gone to a certain limit where human beings are constantly challenging nature. These incidents demonstrate how recklessly human beings are treating nature and remind us of the devastating consequences that can arise when we continuously exploit and disrupt the natural systems on which our civilisation depends. Nature has its own power. If we challenge it in a negative sense and try to destroy it, it will definitely come back to us, because nature has its own system, which operates according to its science and its own universal laws. Once the laws and logic behind the orchestrated activities within nature are disturbed, nature responds, and it has the ability to destroy not only an entire civilisation but also to harm all living species on Earth.


Therefore, human beings are not only creating trouble for themselves; they are also creating danger for other living species on this planet. That is why there is a need to look again at the basis of our civilisation. There is a huge need for restructuring, and this is where the importance of Sustainability Transformation becomes significant. The importance of protecting biodiversity, taking action to protect the Earth from global warming, addressing ozone depletion, and implementing the circular economy all come into this larger picture.


The basic concept of human civilisation is to utilise nature to collect input materials and further process them to yield the desired products for consumption. After use, the leftover substances and wastes are disposed of and released into nature. Additionally, the useless substances that come out during the processing of the input materials are also released into nature. Along with material, energy is used to flow from the input to the output material flow direction. This is also the fundamental basis of economies, which links the amount of raw materials collected and the processing capabilities required to meet the requirements of human beings on a social platform.


Financial transactions drive the entire material flow. From the viewpoint of material flow, the economy is perceived as a linear throughput system. Socioeconomic production and consumption patterns impact the physical flow between the environment and the economy, which is influenced by technology, lifestyle, and cultural values. Material flow provides information about environmental pressures such as the scarcity of key natural resources, ecosystem degradation, and excessive pollution and waste. This information helps us rethink the use of natural resources and transform socioeconomic activities to reduce environmental pressure from the economy by minimising or nullifying natural resource exploitation.


The circular economy is a transformational model that can redesign economic activities by creating sustainable value for society and the environment. The primary objective of the circular economy is to eliminate waste and pollution. The driving forces for achieving this objective are keeping materials in use within the economy and regenerating natural systems. So, there are twofold concepts for the circular economy. One is keeping materials in use, and the other is regenerating natural systems.

The circular economy encourages innovative product design for endurance and modularity. It also calls for novel operations and manufacturing processes for products. It promotes the sharing of products as much as possible by a larger mass of people instead of everyone purchasing the same product. The circular economy calls for designing products in such a way that they can be repaired multiple times, reused with minor maintenance, remanufactured through refurbishment, and finally recycled at the end of their lives. It facilitates keeping materials and the products made from them in circulation within the economy for a longer period of time. It reduces dependence on new materials and energy while also reducing environmental pressure.


Reducing environmental pressure is therefore one of the most important aspects of the circular economy. It helps in decoupling the economy from the environment, and that is the key to protecting human civilisation, human life, and life on Earth in general. It can help us rethink our way of living, and it can help us to live coherently with nature instead of destroying it to an extreme point where a tipping point can be reached, which could cause the destruction of human civilisation and human life. That is why it is important for us to look again into the way we behave, the way we articulate our civilisation, and the way we conduct our activities. We need to rethink our activities and redesign our whole economic system so that human civilisation can coexist with nature and also with other living species on this planet. 


So that devastating incidents like the one in Nepal should not happen, we need to make our Earth more sustainable and more responsible for our future generations. Ultimately, we need to rethink the way we have structured our civilisation 

and the way our economic system interacts with nature. The objective should not be to stop development, but to redesign development in a way that allows human beings, nature, and other living species to coexist.
